About the trek
The Valley of Flowers National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the North Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, is a seasonal alpine miracle. Hidden from view until you cross the inner forest check-post of the Garhwal Himalayas, this 87.5 square kilometer sanctuary transforms during the monsoon months into a sprawling, multi-colored blanket of alpine blooms. From the legendary Blue Poppies and Brahma Kamals to Cobra Lilies and Primulas, the valley floors come alive in a dreamlike tapestry. Bordered by the pristine Laxman Ganga and the raw glacier slopes of Nanda Devi National Park, this trail seamlessly merges profound botanical wonders with the spiritual serenity of Hemkund Sahib—the highest Sikh shrine in the world, sitting perfectly beside a crystal-clear glacial lake at 14,100 feet. It is a bucket-list journey designed for photographers, nature purists, and those seeking absolute peace in the high mountains.

Day-by-Day Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Rishikesh/Haridwar to Govindghat via Joshimath
Tracing the holy rivers deep into the Garhwal hills
Altitude: 1,920 m / 6,300 ft (Govindghat)
Drive: ~270 km (9–10 hours)
Stay: Hotel / Guest House (Govindghat)
Meals: Evening Snacks & Dinner included
The expedition begins early morning from Rishikesh or Haridwar. After boarding our outstation vehicles and settling in, we embark on one of the most scenic hill drives in Uttarakhand. The mountain highway winds gracefully alongside the holy Ganges and Alaknanda rivers. Along the way, we cross the famous Prayags (confluences)—Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag—where different glacial rivers merge in a powerful display of nature.
As we drive past Joshimath, the gateway to the high valleys, the landscape shifts into dramatic, sheer rock cliffs and deep gorges. By late afternoon, we arrive at Govindghat, a vibrant transit town sitting on the banks of the Alaknanda. Here, we check into our hotel, settle our gear, and hold a detailed briefing session to prepare for the trail ahead. A warm, freshly prepared dinner marks our first night in the mountains.
Day 2: Govindghat to Ghangaria via Pulna Village
Following the roaring Laxman Ganga into the alpine woods
Altitude: 3,000 m / 9,800 ft (Ghangaria)
Drive: 4 km (Govindghat to Pulna Trailhead)
Trek: ~9 km (5–6 hours)
Stay: Camp stays (Ghangaria Base)
Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch & Dinner included
After a hearty breakfast, a short 15-minute drive brings us to the village of Pulna, the official trailhead for our trek. Lacing up our boots, we begin our foot journey along a well-defined stone-paved trail that traces the thunderous Laxman Ganga river. The trail climbs steadily, surrounded by dense canopies of oak, rhododendron, and alpine shrubs.
The air grows crisper with every mile. The path is lively, dotted with local tea shops and bridges over cascading mountain waterfalls. Keep an eye out for glimpses of snow-capped peaks piercing through the monsoon mist. The final stretch introduces a steeper series of switchbacks that will test your legs, but the crisp mountain breeze keeps you moving.
By afternoon, we march into Ghangaria, a cozy, high-altitude base settlement nestled in a dense pine grove. Ghangaria serves as our operational hub for the next three nights. After checking into your rooms and drying off, enjoy hot mountain tea, relax your muscles, and savor a heavy dinner before the big floral day tomorrow.
Day 3: Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers National Park and Back
Stepping into the hidden paradise of a thousand blooms
Altitude: 3,500 m / 11,500 ft (Valley of Flowers)
Drive: — (Trek day)
Trek: ~4 km each way (6–7 hours total exploration)
Stay: Camp stays(Ghangaria Base)
Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch & Dinner included
Today is the day you’ve been waiting for. We head out early to cross the Forest Department check-post, where the main trail to the Valley of Flowers splits. The path crosses a spectacular suspension bridge over the roaring Pushpawati river. As you progress, the forest falls away, and the main valley stays entirely hidden from view until you cross a final ridge—making the opening view feel like entering a secret paradise.
Suddenly, the valley opens up into a massive, undulating alpine basin flanked by towering, glacier-carved peaks. A vibrant, natural carpet of pink, purple, yellow, and white blankets the earth as far as the eye can see. We spend hours walking the interior trails of the park, identifying rare species like the elusive Blue Poppy, the unique Cobra Lily, and endless fields of wild river orchids.
We carry a packed lunch to enjoy deep within the valley, surrounded by streams of crystal-clear glacial runoff. By early afternoon, keeping with park safety regulations, we begin our gentle descent back to Ghangaria. A warm, comforting dinner awaits us at our base camp.
Day 4: Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib and Back
The steep, rewarding climb to the mirror glacial lake
Altitude: 4,300 m / 14,100 ft (Hemkund Sahib Summit)
Drive: — (Summit Day)
Trek: ~6 km each way (8–9 hours of strenuous trekking)
Stay: Camp stays(Ghangaria Base)
Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch & Dinner included
We rise before the sun into the biting cold morning air. Today’s climb to Hemkund Sahib is physically demanding but deeply spiritual. The trail is a continuous, steep incline on a beautifully paved stone path that climbs roughly 4,300 feet over just 6 kilometers. Take slow, measured paces as the altitude makes itself known.
As you near the final ridges, the surrounding tree line gives way to barren rock and slopes covered in the sacred Brahma Kamal flowers, which only grow at these extreme heights. Reaching the top, the sight is absolute magic: a pristine, emerald-green glacial lake perfectly reflecting the seven jagged, snow-draped peaks that encircle it. Standing next to the lake is the historic Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara.
Trekkers can visit the holy shrine, sip on hot, legendary Langar tea and khichdi, and sit in profound silence by the cold waters. The peace here is unshakeable. By early afternoon, before the weather turns moody, we begin the long downward trek back to Ghangaria. The descent requires focus to protect the knees, ending back at our rooms for a triumphant celebratory dinner.
Day 5: Ghangaria to Govindghat
Descending the mountain trails back to our riverside base
Altitude: 1,920 m / 6,300 ft (Govindghat)
Trek: ~9 km down to Pulna (4–5 hours) + 4 km drive
Stay: Hotel / Guest House (Govindghat)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
We enjoy a relaxed breakfast in Ghangaria, letting our bodies recover after the intense summit day at Hemkund Sahib. Packing up our luggage, we bid farewell to the pine groves of Ghangaria and begin our 9 km downhill trek back toward the valley floor. Walking downhill lets you appreciate the deep, forested river gorges and roaring waterfalls at a much faster, easier pace.
Upon reaching the village of Pulna, our outstation vehicles will be waiting to transfer us back to our hotel in Govindghat. Check back into your rooms, take a long-awaited hot shower, and unwind completely.
You have the afternoon entirely at leisure—you can explore the local riverside mountain markets, visit the beautiful Govindghat Gurudwara on the banks of the river, or simply relax by the water with a fresh cup of tea. We gather tonight for a hearty group dinner to share stories from our time in the high country.
Day 6: Drive from Govindghat to Rishikesh / Haridwar
The journey home along the winding valleys
Altitude: 372 m / 1,220 ft (Rishikesh)
Drive: ~270 km (9–10 hours)
Stay: Drop-off at Transit Base
Meals: Breakfast included (Lunch en route at own expense)
Our final morning starts with an early breakfast at the hotel. We load our bags into the vehicles one last time and hit the national highway for the return leg to Rishikesh or Haridwar. Because we are starting directly from Govindghat, our road day is streamlined and efficient. The drive takes us back down the grand valley corridors, letting you watch the roaring Himalayan rivers slowly transform into the wide, peaceful plains below.
We pull back into the Rishikesh transit base by late afternoon or early evening. As you gather your backpacks and say goodbye to your fellow explorers and guides, you will head home carrying the scent of rain-kissed meadows, the triumph of a 14,100 ft peak, and memories of a valley that looks like heaven on earth. Travel safe.
