About the trek
Hidden deep in the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary of Chamoli, Rudranath enshrines the face of Lord Shiva — the only one of the five Kedars where the divine mukha is worshipped. Reached only on foot through remote ridges and rolling bugyals, it is widely held to be the longest and most demanding trek of the Panch Kedar circuit. This high, wild pilgrimage pairs perfectly with Kalpeshwar — the serene, year-round shrine nestled in the green Urgam Valley — offering a rare blend of raw adventure and timeless devotion.
Trek Highlights
● The Face of Shiva
Stand before Rudranath at ~11,800 ft, the sacred mukha lingam of the Panch Kedar, cradled by alpine meadows and distant snow peaks.
● Endless Bugyals
Walk for hours across Lweti and Panar — vast, rolling Himalayan grasslands carpeted in wildflowers under an open sky.
● The Cave Shrine
Close the sacred circuit at Kalpeshwar — an ancient stone temple reached through a natural rock passage where Shiva’s matted locks are revered.
● Giant Peak Views
Sweeping vistas of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Hathi-Ghoda Parvat unfold across the ridgelines on a clear morning.
Day-by-Day Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Delhi to Sagar Village
Into the foothills of the gods
Altitude: 1,550 m / 5,100 ft (Sagar Village)
Drive: ~440 km (12–14 hours)
Trek: None (Road day & prep)
Stay: Shiva Homestay (Sagar Village)
Meals: Evening Snacks & Dinner included
Our Panch Kedar adventure begins with an early morning pickup from Delhi. Settle in for a long, scenic drive along the Ganga as the plains give way to the green, terraced ridges of the Garhwal Himalayas — the landscape slowly rising toward the abode of Shiva. We break the journey with relaxed sightseeing stops at riverside ghats and historic confluences, keeping the pace unhurried so you arrive fresh.
The winding mountain road carries the cool fragrance of pine as we climb toward the Chamoli district. By evening, we reach the quiet, beautiful terraced community of Sagar, situated just outside Gopeshwar.
Upon arrival, check into the welcoming Shiva Homestay, where your trek leader will run through a quick route briefing, gear check, and complete the mandatory forest registration. Gather tonight for a warm, home-cooked Garhwal meal and rest well at the literal gateway to the trail — the wild country of Rudranath waits just beyond the ridge.
Day 2: Sagar to Lweti Bugyal
Forests open into endless grass
Altitude: 3,350 m / 11,000 ft (Lweti Bugyal)
Drive: — (Trek day)
Trek: ~11 km (5–6 hours)
Stay: Tented Camp (Lweti Bugyal)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
After an early breakfast, the trek officially begins. The trail rises steadily from Sagar through a dense forest of ancient oak and rhododendron, dappled in shifting alpine light and alive with mountain birdsong — a beautiful, immersive introduction to the Rudranath wilderness.
As you climb higher, the heavy canopy begins to thin, and the world suddenly opens up into the high grasslands the Garhwal is famed for. Cross flower-strewn slopes and pause at clearings where the first distant snow-capped peaks make their dramatic appearance on the horizon. The ascent is honest, demanding, and immensely rewarding, with each passing ridge revealing a wider sweep of mountain country.
By afternoon, you will reach Lweti Bugyal — a serene, high-altitude alpine meadow ringed beautifully by forest boundaries and far summits. Settle into your tents as the grass turns from gold to amber under a sky that fills slowly with a brilliant canopy of Himalayan stars.
Day 3: Lweti Bugyal to Rudranath
Where heaven touches earth
Altitude: 3,600 m / 11,800 ft (Rudranath Temple)
Drive: — (Summit day)
Trek: ~10 km (6–7 hours)
Stay: Guesthouse / Tents (Near Temple)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included
Today is the crown of the journey. Rise early and step into the crisp mountain air as the trail carries you higher across open bugyals and exposed ridgelines, gaining steady altitude toward Pitradhar. Every step up here is silent, steep, and utterly alive with thin-air majesty.
As you cross the pass, the valley dramatically unfolds and Rudranath appears — an ancient stone shrine cradled safely in the high meadows at ~11,800 ft, where the very face of Lord Shiva is worshipped. On a clear day, Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Nanda Ghunti stand guard like titans on the absolute edge of the horizon. Offer your darshan and let the profound, ancient stillness of this sacred ground settle over you.
Spend the night near the temple in this rare, deeply remote sanctuary — far from roads, crowds, and noise. A warm meal, a sky thick with stars, and the quiet pride of standing at one of the most spiritually charged places in the entire Himalayas will close out your evening..
Day 4: Return to Sagar Village
Retracing the living trail
Altitude: 1,550 m / 5,100 ft (Sagar Village)
Drive: — (Trek day)
Trek: ~21 km descent (7–8 hours)
Stay: Shiva Homestay (Sagar Village)
Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included (Packed lunch on trail)
After a quiet sunrise at the high shrine, begin the long descent back toward Sagar. The trail you climbed over the last two days now reveals entirely new faces — meadows seen from above, deep valleys opening in different light, and the satisfying rhythm of a long downhill walk through familiar, beloved country.
Re-enter the cool oak and rhododendron forests, crossing gurgling mountain streams and taking unhurried, controlled steps on the steeper switchback sections. Pause often to look back at the high ridges you stood upon just the day before, accepting each glimpse as a parting gift from the mountain.
Reach Sagar village by late afternoon and return to the deep comfort of Shiva Homestay. Share a celebratory dinner with your team — exchanging stories, laughter, and the deep, earned calm that follows a great summit circuit. Tonight promises a warm bed and well-rested sleep.
Day 5: Kalpeshwar & Journey Home
The last of the five Kedars
Altitude: 2,200 m / 7,200 ft (Kalpeshwar)
Drive: Long drive back to Rishikesh / Delhi
Trek: Short walk (Urgam Valley)
Stay: Drop-off at Delhi / Rishikesh
Meals: Breakfast included (Lunch & dinner en route at own expense)
We break camp after breakfast and drive into the lush, hidden Urgam Valley for the final shrine of our circuit. A short, gentle walk past wooden footbridges and terraced fields along the roaring Kalpganga brings you to Kalpeshwar — a small, ancient stone temple reached through a striking natural rock passage. Uniquely, Kalpeshwar is the only Panch Kedar shrine open all year round; here, Shiva is revered in the form of his matted locks (jata). Offer a quiet, fitting close to your pilgrimage in this serene green setting, so different from the high, wild country of Rudranath.
Following your visit, begin the long, memory-laden drive back to Rishikesh or Delhi. The winding roads that carried you up now carry you gently home — rich with new friendships, a completed sacred circuit, and a deeper, quieter bond with the Himalayas. Until the mountains call again, travel safe.
